Survival Skills Class – Fun, Rewarding and Challenging Experience

Our survival skills class is held outdoors in a part of the Tassie wilderness (or as close as we can get with permission from the schools) – Survival Courses Tasmania (SCT) offers fun, rewarding and challenging educational experiences for students to develop creative thinking, problem-solving, teamwork, self-discipline and self-motivation skills.

Critically, as well as learning survival and bushcraft techniques on these carefully designed courses…students will develop their self-confidence and self-reliance.

Students will learn valuable life skills such as the priorities of survival, how to construct natural shelters and light a fire in damp / cold conditions, filtering water so that it’s safe to drink, using natural navigation, rescue signalling, learning wilderness first aid and much more.

In addition to our regular school survival skills class, we offer the opportunity to go on a 2- or 3-day school survival camp, which we currently run annually for a couple of schools across Tasmania.

The students will be away from a classroom-style environment, which will help them to learn more practically and with a hands-on approach.

SCT works with PCYC and other youth development organisations, numerous schools around Tasmania, as well as local businesses and organisations to provide fun and challenging learning content.

Students will get involved with all aspects of a typical survival and bushcraft training course (carefully supervised), and will also reinforce knowledge from the sciences, health, physical education, as well as creative subjects such as design and technology.

The aim of our survival skills class or school camp is to:

  • Create unique learning opportunities in distinctive and challenging environments
  • Encourage intellectual, physical and social development
  • Encourage an open-minded and respectful learning environment (respect to each other as well as respect for the natural wilderness around them)
  • Help students gain an insight into traditional skills and culture
  • Provide opportunities to learn life skills, responsibilities, self-discipline and self-esteem while becoming self-reliant
  • Re-connect students to the natural world and our place within it

Much more than just survival, though, bushcraft is an almost endless bounty of knowledge that enables us to feel a real connection with the landscape and gain an insight into traditional cultures.

SCT School & Youth Development Outdoor Education programs are based on our series of bushcraft and survival classes – adapted to suit different cohorts – with the flexibility to customise and tweak content to suit your school outcomes and curriculum needs.

SCT’s survival skills class or classes can run either as standalone training courses or as part of a longer-term program. Our courses and school camps run all year round.

The course delivery is tailored for each individual school, youth development organisation, or private group based on the length of the course chosen, as well as the age, prior experience and demonstrated engagement and ability of the students as a group.

So, why not come and join us on one of our fully adaptable and flexible bushcraft and survival classes…where you as the teacher or outdoor educator can decide what you want to get out of the course individually, or you can ask us for advice on what might work best for your student cohort?

Please contact us directly if you are interested in discussing one of our opportunities for your school or youth development organisation.
